Shame on Sharma

By Nigel Bakhai, Liberal Democrat on Apr 29, 10 12:33 PM

Ealing Southall Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Nigel Bakhai has slammed Labour's Virendra Sharma for failing to turn up to an election debate on the future of Ealing Hospital.

The future of Ealing Hospital appears to be in jeopardy after recent revelations that the Accident and Emergency, Maternity and Children's wards are all under threat. A meeting was called at Dormers Wells High School by concerned local residents and candidates from the three main parties were invited to speak. However, the Labour candidate failed to show after accepting the invitation, and the Conservative candidate walked out half way through the meeting after facing criticism on his party's policies.

Nigel Bakhai said: "The Labour candidate failed to speak up in Parliament when the stroke unit was threatened and his failure to attend this meeting clearly proves that he is not the man to defend Ealing Hospital from future closures. This is the number one issue for local residents in our area and he is arrogant enough to believe that he doesn't need to defend his Government's actions because he takes their votes for granted."

It's an absolute disgrace. Vote out "Shameless Sharma" and vote in Gurcharan Singh (sorry Nige)!

I think that this is a dangerous topic for the LibDems to be pursuing without further investigation. Ealing Hospital is viewed by many in the Borough as a death trap (usually through personal experience). I for one would welcome the closure of Ealing Hospital (perhaps it could become an office block housing some aspect of NHS activity that does not involve patients like NHS direct) WERE IT TO BE REPLACED BY SOMETHING ELSE.

I believe that the LibDems should ask the public: "Do you want a new hospital to replace Ealing Hospital" and see what the answer is. NHS employees and member of unions such as Unite should be excluded from this polling for obvious reasons.

We need better hospital facilities and we need them in CENTRAL EALING. Why not turn Dickens Yard, or the defaulting cinema redevelopment opposite the Town Hall into a modern accessible hospital with easy access to tube and rail transport. One of the key problems of the present Ealing Hospital is that it is only accessible by bus and by car: hence the staff clogging up the car parks.

A further point is that professionals in London look to be located with easy access via the tube network. Siting a hospital where Ealing Hospital was a blunder from the era of two-car households that embodied the creation of Milton Keynes (a car-only city). Now that we are starting to understand ecological issues better the only ting that makes sense is to place a new hospital where people can get to it easily (and centrally). And of course, the best professionals would naturally be attracted to work somewhere that was easily accessible.

For some strange reason, the major hospitals serving Ealing are situated 25 mins walk away from the nearest tubes top in the case of Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital, while Ealing Hospital is about 45 minutes walk away from the nearest tube.

Again, sorry Nige, you seem a decent bloke but come on - trying to be a councillor in 2 different wards is biting off a bit much isn't it?!

In the interest of balance, here's my take on the impotence of Sharma as an MP:
